Cape Byron is a place of spectacular scenic beauty.  Named by Captain James Cook, after British explorer John Byron (Grandfather of the Romantic poet Lord Byron) it sits on the easternmost point of Australia’s Pacific coast, on the northeast tip of New South Wales.

It is also a special place in Aboriginal culture. The Arakwal clan, are caretakers of the area, which has been used as a lookout, for camping and for ceremonies for more than 1000 years. The area around the cape is dotted with ancient burial grounds, eating places and sites of important mythological ‘dreamtime’ stories.

Standing on the high jagged cliffs at Cape Byron you can look out to the ocean, and the migration path of humpback whale, or back across rainforest into the stunning Hinterland. Visit the Cape Byron Lighthouse, or spend an hour or two immersed in the views along the 5km trail around the headland.

The Cape is about 3kms from the township of Byron Bay (population approx 5,000), and is part of the Cape Byron Marine Park, a preservation area established in 2002, covering around 22,000 hectares extending from Brunswick Head in the north to Lennox Heads in the South.
