The first Europeans moved into the Tweed Heads area in the mid 19th century. After logging the rain-forest and clearing ground, settlers took up dairy farming and established orchards and market gardens in the rich volcanic soil. If you like to fish, then fire up the barby and be prepared to land plenty of sole, bream, flathead and trevally. The Tweed river weaves through town, and is the site of lots of fishing events and contests. Walkers and joggers also like to follow the trail of the river bank. The Tweed Heads tourism sector caters for visitors to four National Parks located in the Tweed Valley – the Springbrook, Border Ranges, Lamington and Nightcap national parks - also the shield volcano Mount Warning and the near by Minjungbal Aboriginal Cultural Centre. The annual Wintersun festival, a retro rock'n'roll revival event attracts thousands from Australia and beyond. An attractive destination on its own, Tweed Heads also benefits from proximity to the Gold Coast tourist trail. Lucky travelling surfers and sun-seekers discover the seaside villages scattered along the New Tweed Coast. |
