Broken Hill, New South Wales has been called many names due its location like the Oasis of the West and The Silver City to name a few. Surrounded by semi deserts this city still manages to shine out like a gem amidst all the sand with parks, colorful garden displays and numerous attractions.

You could say that the city got its name from what it’s famous for, mining. Many explorers saw the hill that looked like it had been cracked and thus called the place Broken Hill. Although the hill has long been gone due to mining the name still reminds the locals of their rich heritage and where their roots first started. Broken Hill's economy has long been supported by its rich mines being known as the world's richest lead-zinc ore and silver-lead-zinc provider. It is no wonder why its very own Broken Hill Proprietary Company is now a member of BHP Billiton which is the world's largest mining company. With its ever steady resources and its economy's steady rise its wildlife and ecosystem is also as bountiful as its rich mines.

Located 9Kms from the city is Broken Hill's own hidden jewel, The Living Desert Flora & Fauna Sanctuary. The 2.5Km stretch sanctuary provides tourists and locals a glimpse of the desert wildlife. Along the trail you will also encounter some other stuff like Broken Hill's many kinds of native flowers and plants, animal viewing hides, mine sites, native animals like wallabies and kangaroos and many sites and landscapes that will surely take your breath away. The Living Desert Flora & Fauna Sanctuary also provides guests and nature enthusiast a recreational and picnic area where people can enjoy the sites and sound around them while enjoying the free barbecue provided for them.

Broken Hill is a very family oriented city offering their locals and guests alike many entertainment and leisure activities that are perfect for each member of the family. Why not enjoy the day with a splash and head on down to Broken Hill's Regional Aquatic Center. It houses heated pools with different sizes starting with the 50m, 25m, medium size and toddler pools. The center also added waters slides, activity equipments and picnic areas to complete the whole fun filled day experience. Broken Hill, New South Wales concern for public health also extended on to implementing a smoke free law around the city's playground, sporting areas, parks and playgrounds. A restriction has been put around the areas enabling anyone from smoking unless they are 10 meters away thus avoiding the public from acquiring second hand smoke.

With its many sites to wander around, breath taking views to see and many fun filled activities yet to be experienced, Broken Hill really is a must go and see on the list. Finding an accommodation around the place is never a problem with all the hotels and bed & breakfasts up and ready to serve anyone. You'll never run out of adventure when it comes to Australia's Silver city.
